Hey FRIDAY, How Are AIs Doing?

Ever since ChatGPT became a thing, people have had a generally negative reaction to it. However, it’s essential to understand that it is a natural reaction–people do not like to deal with what is unknown. More so, this is exacerbated by the fast pace of development of these large language models (LLMs).

Browne (2023) reports that Italy was the inaugural Western nation to impose a temporary prohibition on ChatGPT, citing apprehensions regarding privacy. An investigation was initiated by the Italian Data Protection Authority into OpenAI's ChatGPT due to a probable violation of privacy regulations. Nonetheless, the prohibition was rescinded subsequent to OpenAI's resolution of the concerns made by the governing body.

In other news, Kaur (2023) reports that both the United States and China are actively pursuing the implementation of legislation to regulate AI tools such as ChatGPT. China in particular has implemented preliminary regulations specifically aimed at generative AI services, mandating their compliance with measures to avoid the dissemination of biased content and misinformation. Meanwhile, the United States solicited public feedback regarding potential mechanisms for holding AI tools and systems accountable.

Artificial intelligence apps I use today.

On my end, I believe that artificial intelligence will only further improve as time goes by. What I would like to see from governments is to enact legislation and policies that would protect users from data privacy, intellectual property, and the like. This technology must be viewed as a service for us to streamline repetitive work as well as aid us in fastening our processes. We should not be scared of artificial intelligence and what it can do to us, but rather, we must focus on what it can do for us.

With that being said, I believe that technology is a big part of the hard skills I currently possess. It has made my life significantly easier and more productive, as I use them to aid me in what I do. As such, I do not get overwhelmed or hesitant to try out these uprising technologies. Moreover, I could not see myself not using these technologies at all. One can venture to say that I should not be extremely dependent on technology, but in a fast-paced world where you must be adaptable, I believe that these technologies are there to support us in our endeavors more than ever. Harnessing these opportunities helps us save on resources such as time, finance, and effort. Having said that, I can definitely see myself using these technologies long into the future after I graduate from my studies, as they are extremely helpful and insightful.

Now, this begs the question of establishing boundaries with the usage of artificial intelligence in our day-to-day lives. I would never submit an essay generated by an AI that is not double-checked by me. While I admit to using ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Quillbot, I simply use them as aids to accomplish my deliverables rather than having them completely take over. These AIs are supposed to be just that–artificial. We, as humans, must prove to ourselves that we are still superior to it, because if we let it consume us, then we might as well let the AIs take over us.

The problem with AIs now lies with how tempting it is to be lazy and just let them take over the work. But as I have said, we cannot let something artificial be better than us. These tools are called that term for a reason, and we must use and treat them as such. In popular culture, I often think of Iron Man’s JARVIS, FRIDAY, KAREN, and EDITH AIs from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I personally think it would be fun to have AI as advanced as that soon to help us with our day-to-day lives. In the long run, having artificial intelligence aid us in streamlining and hastening processes is an amazing thing to dream of.
